Operator Certification & Training
Operator Certification (OpCert)

All PWS operators on the Navajo Nation are required to become state certified
to the appropriate level as established by the Navajo PWSSP.  The PWSSP
will recognize state certificates until the Navajo Nation has fully developed and
implemented it’s own operator certification program.

  • The certificates are valid for the same period as with the certifying

  • Operators are required to submit a copy of the certificate along with an
    application form and fee to register with the Navajo PWSSP.

  • Operator certifications received from the States of New Mexico, Arizona
    and Utah acceptable to the Navajo PWSSP.

Operator Training & Workshops

All Navajo Nation Water System Operators are encouraged to attend these workshops. Earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs) from either a
training or workshop to maintain your operator certification. NOTE: Navajo PWSSP does not reimburse trainees for their travel (i.e. meals, mileage,
lodging). The trainee is responsible for their own travel expenses. For all free workshops and training classes, please contact Valerie Tannie at (928)

Educational Studies in Water Technologies

Working in the water technology involves monitoring quality of water resources and maintaining local, state and federal requirements for safety

Our program has found educational water operator training at some colleges and universities. These classroom or online sessions are available to
operators who are willing to further educate themselves to enhance water resources, protecting public health, and coordinating job readiness. A
successful career in this profession requires technician and/or operators to have:

  • A high level of math and science proficiency
  • Thorough knowledge of water quality standards
  • Knowledge of plant operations and maintenance procedures
